A Team

by Steve on June 22, 2010 0 Comments

The A Team is worth seeing if you have an afternoon with not much else to do.

It's hot outside. So, sitting in a nice cool theater munching on popcorn is better than being out in the heat. And, if you hit the afternoon matinee, you can save a few bucks.

The movie is fairly bland. There is some action. But, don't expect it to be very realistic.

The movie is made a lot like a TV show. I suppose that is okay, since The A Team was a TV show. I remember watching it, because those were the days when you only had a few channels to watch and you picked the most "watchable" thing on.

So, if you remember the show, just imagine everything a little updated and a little bigger.

I think the movie could have had better casting. And, they could have went more ...

The Loosers

by Steve on April 27, 2010 0 Comments

The Loo ...zzzers almost put me to sleep. I thought it would be a decent movie because it was said to have lot's of action.

It did have action, but the overall feel of the movie reminded me of a 70's TV show. The best way I can describe it is to say it was kind of "corny".

I won't say it's a bad movie. And, it certainly wasn't a good movie. It was just a movie. I found myself sitting in the theater not really caring much about what happened.

It was based on a comic book, which is a huge trend these days. I am not familiar with that comic book. I did have the feeling that the movie was kind of miscast.

My biggest complaint with The Loosers was the "hand-held-jerky-camera" effect. I have complained about this before. It seems like 99 ...

Oceans

by Steve on April 23, 2010 0 Comments

I give all due respect to the cameramen that risk their lives. But, Oceans did not seem to offer much that was new or groundbreaking.

I enjoyed the Planet Earth (the oceans) documentary much more. Pierce Brosnan was a good choice as the narrator.

These types of documentaries serve as great educational tools. They also serve as a "record" for future generations. And, they serve to inspire people to try to do a better job of taking care of the environment.

These are all admirable things.

But, as for the entertainment value of Oceans ...it was lacking. The film moved at a very slow pace. I like nature documentaries. But, I found myself squirming in my seat and looking at my watch way too often.

Visually, everyhting was beautiful. The quality of everything was top notch.

But, beyond that, there was nothing that I noticed that stood out from other ...

Kick-Ass

by Steve on April 21, 2010 0 Comments

Kick-Ass is a good movie. There is some controversy because of the level of violence portrayed by such a young actor.

That actor is Chloe Moretz. She plays Hit Girl. She is suppose to be eleven in the film. She was recently on the Tonight Show with Jay Lenno. She is now fourteen and has developed into a beautiful young lady who is well on her way to becoming a very big star. She played the role extremely well. She has true charisma.

The film is rated R. So, parents need to understand what that means. It includes a recommended viewing age. Young actors can appear in R rated films with strong adult language and heavy violence, even though they would be considered too young to view those films. That is really the controversy.

Any way you slice it, this girl steals the show. The movie is based on a ...

Date Night

by Steve on April 10, 2010 0 Comments

Tina Fey. She's funny. She's smart. She's pretty. That's not a package you run across every day. She is by far the best thing about this movie. If you don't watch 30 Rock, you need to give it a try. Thanks to Fey and Alec Baldwin, it's one of the funniest shows on TV. Steve Carell does a good job in Date Night, as well. I think he's better in his movie roles than his TV role as the boss on The Office. However, this movie Only qualifies as "humorous" rather than laugh out loud funny.

It is a romantic comedy that probably has more good "romantic" moments than it does "comedy" Moments. The best (and funniest) part of the movie is the chase scene with the taxi. It is one of the most original chase scenes you will ever see. The taxi ...

How To TrainYour Dragon (3D)

by Steve on April 6, 2010 0 Comments

3D has hit the big time. It seems like there is a continuous stream of 3D movies coming out these days. And, this is probably the best 3D movie to date. DreamWorks really knows how to put the whole package together.

Everything is done very well. The musical score adds to the excitement and adventure of the action scenes. The 3D effects seem to be consistent throughout the movie. Many of the 3D movies seem to have parts where you notice the 3D and a whole lot more parts where you really don't.

The flying scenes are especially good. And, there are plenty of them scattered through the movie. Even the backdrops in many of the scenes stand out as having a noticeable 3D effect.

The bad thing about the new wave of 3D is the ticket prices. They are expensive. I think they are more expensive than they ...

Repo Men

by Steve on March 21, 2010 0 Comments

Law and Whitaker are both good actors who can usually get the job done. As they say, a job's a job. This movie also co-stars Liev Schreiber as the bad guy. He certainly comes off as one of those bad guys you love to hate.

The movie has a good premise. In the future, people have hi-tech organ implants to lengthen their lives. The problem is that they fall behind on their payments and the repo men come to cut your heart out.

The movie is worth going to see if you overlook some of the flaws.

The future looks bleak where they live. Much of this world is run down, worn out and and dirty. It doesn't look like a future you would want to live in.

If you get queasy watching things like people being sliced up with a scalpal, you will want to skip this ...

Green Zone

by Steve on March 12, 2010 0 Comments

The movie looks like it was shot by a drunk crack addict with a camera strapped to his head.

The camera constantly jerks around, bounces up and down, zooms in and out. The action scenes are shot in very tight close ups in an attempt to give the “illusion or feeling” of high octane action.

What you wind up with are Flashes of close up shots of body parts, weapons, backgrounds and movements that are designed to make you think that you have just watched an action scene.

This kind of filming technique has become too common. Film makers need to come to the realization that there is nothing enjoyable about watching a movie that is shot this way.

I am tired of seeing this filming tactic.

When a movie is shot this way, nothing else matters. It doesn’t deserve reviewing any further.

Crazies

by Steve on February 26, 2010 0 Comments

It was better than I expected it to be. It was part Zombie movie and part government-military-disaster-cover-up movie.

Most of the cast looked as if they had been plucked right out of the fields of a small farm town. The two notable exceptions to that were the Sherriff (Timothy Olyphant) and his wife (Radha Mitchell).

Olyphant will probably look familiar to you. And Mitchell is a bit too pretty for us to believe she is one of the local townsfolk. They both do a good job, there's just a noticeable contrast between these two and the rest of the locals.

The subject matter has all been done before. As a matter of fact, it's been done to death. But, they manage to mix and match two different types of movies together here with a better than average result.

The movie does quite a few things right. The musical ...

The Wolfman

by Steve on February 12, 2010 0 Comments

This wolfman was a bit of a dog. But, if you are a fan of old fashion monster movies, you might still enjoy it.

One thing the movie did pretty well was the transformation of man into wolfman. The movie did have some CGI, though not excessive. The action scenes where the wolfman was fighting or running had to use CGI. That is the only way you could have done it and made it look acceptable.

The CGI was also done well. There was some blood, guts and gore. That is what you expect from a monster movie. The setting is "Old London". That is one more part of the experience that gave the movie an old fashion feel.

To be honest, I don't see why you would want to do a re-make of this type of movie and keep so much of it the same as most of ...
